A fully worked horizontal well example

Assume you inherited 14.4444 net mineral acres in a section in Martin County, Texas. The operator drills a horizontal Wolfcamp well and pools your tract into a standard 640-acre drilling unit. Your lease reserves a 25% royalty. The math looks like this:

14.4444 ÷ 640 × 0.25 = 0.00564234

Walking through it: 14.4444 divided by 640 equals 0.02256938 — your fractional mineral ownership in the unit. Multiply by the 0.25 royalty rate reserved in your lease and you get 0.00564234, the figure you would generally expect to see on the division order and associated check details, subject to any later ownership or unit adjustments.

To sanity-check, multiply the decimal by the well’s gross monthly revenue. If the well produces $500,000 in gross revenue in a given month, your gross royalty before taxes and post-production deductions is $500,000 × 0.00564234 = $2,821.17. That amount should approximate your gross royalty attributable to the well before applicable taxes, adjustments, and any deductions permitted under your lease. Why a horizontal well decimal looks so much smaller

Owners who received royalties from an older vertical well on the same tract are often surprised at how much smaller the horizontal decimal is. The formula did not change — the denominator did.

A vertical well on a 40-acre or 80-acre proration unit gave you a much larger fraction of that smaller unit. Using the same 14.4444 net mineral acres and 25% royalty on an 80-acre vertical unit, the decimal would be 14.4444 ÷ 80 × 0.25 = 0.04513875 — roughly eight times larger than the horizontal decimal.
